The following criteria before we will consider you as a potential candidate for the lapband surgery.
1. You must be over the age of 18
2. Your BMI range must be between 35 and 60
3. In order to be able to have weight lost surgery, you can’t have any of the following medical conditions. When you call, your personal patient service liaisons will answer any questions you may regarding these conditions:
A. steroid use
B. liver disease (cirrhosis, ascites)
C. drug or alcohol abuse
D. major psychological conditions
E. previous stomach surgery (gastric bypass, vertical gastric banding, nissen, partial gastrectomy)
F. barretis esophagus
G. esophageal motility problems
Your BMI depends on both your weight and your height. The BMI Calculator does not take into consideration muscle in men or women. Muscle as you know is much heavier than fat and should be taken into account when calculating your BMI, to also measure yourself with a tape measure, it is a great way understand if your either obese or just muscular.

An ideal BMI is 19 to 25. If your BMI is between 25 and 30, you are thought to be overweight.
If it is higher than 30, you are obese. That means you are at risk for health problems.
If your BMI is 40 or more, you are said to have “morbid” obesity. A BMI higher than 35 suggests surgery might be a proper approach. These are the people who have other conditions.
For instance, if your BMI is 37 and you probably have severe sleep apnea, diabetes mellitus, or heart problems, and your doctor might suggest surgery to help you lose weight.
Note: We do take patients for the Lap Band procedure for those who have a low BMI.For special cases we also will consider younger than 18 years old.

You have an inflammatory disease or condition of the gastrointestinal tract, such as ulcers, severe esophagitis, or Crohn’s disease.
You have severe heart or lung disease that makes you a poor candidate for surgery.
You have some other disease that makes you a poor candidate for surgery.
You have a problem that could cause bleeding in the esophagus or stomach.
That might include esophageal or gastric varices ( a dilated vein)
It might also be something such as congenital or acquired intestinal telangiectasia (dilation of a small blood vessel).
You have portal hypertension.
Your esophagus, stomach, or intestine is not normal (congenital or acquired). For instance you might have a narrowed opening.
You have or have experienced an intra-operative gastric injury, such as gastric perforation at or near the location of the intended band placement.
You have cirrhosis.
You have chronic pancreatitis.
You are pregnant.
(If you become pregnant after the LAP-Band System has been placed the band may need to be deflated.
The same is true if you need more nutrition for any other reason, such as becoming seriously ill. In rare cases, removal may be needed.)
You are addicted to alcohol or drugs.
You have an infection anywhere in your body or one that could contaminate the surgical area.
You are on chronic, long-term steroid treatment.
You cannot tolerate pain from an implanted device.
You or someone in your family has an autoimmune connective tissue disease.
That might be a disease such as systemic lupus erythematosus or scleroderma.
The same is true if you have symptoms of one of these diseases.
Some surgeons say patients with a “sweet tooth” will not do well with the LAP-BAND System. The same is true if you often drink milkshakes or other high calorie liquids. Lap Band Surgery. You have to change your way of thinking and eating to be successful with Lap-Band.
